How to repair a broken head board

This bed post is broken in a very common way. There is a lot of stress at the connection between the bed side rail and the bed post. The side rail has two hooks at the end of it. These hooks go into the slot on the bed post, and hook over two rods inside the bed post. Many times, this is a weak spot, and the side rail breaks free, taking the pins and portion of wood from the bed post with it. We'll show you how to fix this.

Can you tell me what I can use if I don’t have a band saw? Trying to figure out how to cut it the damaged area.

Michele, I used a router. Before we had power tools, this would have been done using a chisel.

Very helpful, and proof that a picture is worth a thousand words. I called the two boards that are clamped to the leg “splints”, and it’s an ingenious way to support the router as you skate back and forth over the leg to remove the damage.
